Most B2B customers are not buying now. What does that mean for advertising?
B2B marketing can be working even when no sale appears after one month. Most potential customers are simply not buying right now.
In short
The 95-5 rule is not a budget formula. It says that a small part of the market is buying now while the rest may buy later. B2B lead generation needs to capture current demand and build memory for future demand.
One month is often too short
A B2B company does not replace a machine, ERP system or supplier after one click. A need, budget and agreement between several people usually have to come first.
A weak result after a few weeks does not always mean a weak campaign. Check whether buyers were ready and whether measurement covers the whole journey.
What the 95-5 rule actually says
At any moment, only a small part of the market is actively looking for a solution. The rest may know the category but have no reason to speak to a supplier yet.
The exact proportion differs by market. The useful point is that demand has its own timing and advertising cannot force it.
Memory first, enquiry later
Advertising can connect a brand with a particular problem. When that problem becomes urgent, the buyer does not have to start from zero.
Useful content helps people recognise the situation, understand the solution and remember a supplier. Not all of them will submit a form today.
One lead, several decision-makers
A B2B decision often involves users, technical teams, procurement and management. Each group checks something different: operation, integration, price or risk.
The campaign and website need to answer the whole group, not only the first person to click.
B2B advertising channels have different jobs
Google Ads usually captures active searches. LinkedIn can reach companies and roles earlier. Meta can support recognition and return visits.
There is no universal split. Define the job of each channel and how you will know whether it did that job.
Do not look only at the last click
A buyer may see an ad, read an article, return directly, speak to sales and only then submit a form. The last click cannot describe that whole journey.
Alongside forms, measure lead quality, sales acceptance, conversations started and the time from first contact to a real opportunity.
